Description of K7PEH Station

The photo at the right shows my basic equipment.

  • Icom 756 Pro III transceiver.
  • Icom PW-1 solid-state linear amplifier.
  • Yaesu 7800R 144/440 Transceiver.
  • Palstar BT1500A Balanced Tuner (feeding 450-ohm ladderline and center-fed 80-meter dipole)
  • Palstar WM150 RF Meter.
  • Icom SP-23 speaker.
  • Icom 756 (non-PRO) transceiver Backup Rig.
  • Palstar AT1KM Tuner (not used at the moment).
  • Two Astron RS-35M power supplies (primary and backup).
  • Hammarlund HQ-170A receiver (nostalgia from my Novice days 40 years ago).
  • Traffie 5-band HexBeam at 35 feet elevation for 20 through 10.
  • 300 foot horizontal delta loop up at average height of 45 feet above ground. Fed with 450 ohm window style ladder line.
  • Also have a Palstar DL2K dummy load.

Computers used in the shack include two Apple Macs: 17 inch MacBookPro and dual-G5 PowerMac. I also have an old Windows laptop that I used when forced at gun-point and I usually use it merely to display QRZ.com for call sign lookup.

The Desks

This is another photo of my desks. My operating position is there on the left and on the right is my desk servicing the space needs of my two Mac computers.

I have been asked about the screen saver photo on the big 23 inch display screen. It is a photo my wife took of Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach on the northern coast of Oregon. It was a very cold and windy day.

The Primary Rig

This photo shows my primary operating position in front of the Icom 756 Pro III. To the immediate left of the Pro III is the Icom SP23 speaker. And, to the left of that speaker is my Icom 756 (my first transceiver). And, on top is my control head for the Icom PW1 solid-state amplifier. Below are my two Palstar tuners, the AT1KM on the left and the BT1500A balanced line tuner on the right.

Other Stuff

This is the left side of my operating position where I spend very little time. Usually, there is a laptop computer sitting on the desk but I removed it to take these photos. On top, taking up more room then I think it is worth, is my Hammarlund HQ-170A. I bought this as sort of a nostalgia trip a couple of years ago to replace the one that I once had while a Novice in the mid-1960s.

On the lower part are my two Astron power supplies and nestled there to the right is my Palstar dummy load (has a meter on the front) and on top of that is my Yaesu FT-7800R.

Icom PW1

The Icom PW1 sits under the desk on the floor. It is sitting on a little platform with wheels so that I can easily move it around -- it is very heavy.

First Station 2004

The photo at the right is my station in about April 2004 which is about one month after I got licensed again (after 38 years from Novice days). This shows my Icom 756, my Icom R75 (which I have since sold and wish I hadn't). This photo also shows my first tuner, an MFJ automatic tuner that worked quite well.

Evolution of First Station 2004

The photo here shows my Ameritron AL-572 linear amplifier that I added in August 2004.
